During this time of such
deep tragedy and devastation to our nation, I find myself thinking about
people who may not know where to find true solace or worry about how to make
sense out of all of this hurt and pain that God has allowed to occur. Last
night, as Ed and I gathered in prayer with some others, this
Psalm was brought to mind that I felt compelled to share with you.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar,
kingdoms fall; He lifts His voice, the earth melts.
The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob/Israel is our fortress.
Come and see the works of the Lord, the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields with fire.
"Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted in the earth."
The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob/Israel is our fortress. (Psalm 46)
Old Testament Psalms are still true today! Just as Old Testament promises were fulfilled in Jesus and are still true today! My heart aches for people who do not know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. I have prayed that this American tragedy will not turn lukewarm hearts even further away from God, but open blind eyes to see how much we have turned away from, neglected, disowned, or just plain rebelled against God Almighty. God gives us all the answers we need, especially during times of crisis like these. But too many of us have taken God out of our lives, homes, workplaces, government, and even in some of our churches, and then we wonder why God allows these kinds of tragedies to occur. We forget or deny that Satan is alive and very active, especially in the hearts and minds of those who do not have a relationship with the Lord. But it's not too late to change that, though the days are numbered and getting shorter for us all.
God's Word also tells us in John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." That means that even though this world often sucks, we can experience a whole lot more that is better and greater even right now and forevermore, BUT only if we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Knowing Jesus and accepting Jesus are very different things - John 1:12 says "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." I know because Jesus has changed my life since I accepted Him as my Lord and Savior, and I can no longer live that reality without desperately sharing it with you.
God wants us to be sure where we will spend eternity - and make no mistake, there will be an eternity that we all experience; it is our choice where that will be: in Heaven with our Lord, or in hell without Him. You can make that choice right now. God wants you with Him in Heaven, but you need to want to be in Heaven with God and then do something about it. You need to confess you are a sinner (because we all are - Romans 3:23 says "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.") and ask God's forgiveness (because we all need forgiving - 1 John 1:9 says "If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.") You need to invite Jesus into your heart as your Lord and Savior (because God sent Him to die for your sins, then God raised Him up again and
Jesus is very much alive - Romans 10:9-10 says "That if you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.") And you need to commit to allowing the Holy Spirit of God to work in changing your life (because none of us can do it by ourselves, without Him - Psalm 31:5 says "Into your hands I commit my Spirit; redeem me, Lord, the God of truth.") All these blessings can be realized just by praying & believing them (because God is always good - John 16:24 says Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.")
I have fervently prayed for God's salvation for all of my family, friends and other unbelieving people for many years and will continue to do so, but today I needed to do more than just pray; sometimes people need to be shown the way. I hope that is what I have done, at least for some of you; if not, please know that my prayers will not stop, and I will be there to share my Lord and Savior with you whenever you want. And I know God is faithful, because He has been to me, and I know He answers prayers because I have experienced countless answers to my own. Only God can turn these dark days ahead into light that can shine through us; (1 Chronicles 28:9 says "If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.") I hope that you will seek and find that light today.
I don't presume to have all the answers, but I do know that I am saved because we have a great God who loves me and who loves you, and so do I...
